When the great mystic sages have traversed the paths of the profound into illumination, there are footsteps that they have left behind for us to contemplate and walk through.

The famous saying that the great ones have suffered for us means that they have cleared a way for us to walk through the delicate paths of wisdom — without being lost, without deviation, and without the suffering that otherwise would have been truly intense, uncertain, painful, and long in times when there were no clear paths and no allies to help us cross.

What their suffering has given us are the teachings and lessons that remove the pains of confusion for those following the path toward liberation and truth. Since there is only one great suffering in the world — that of ignorance — they have provided tools and methods to move beyond it and into an everlasting happiness along the way, for as long as we are practitioners. This is great indeed.

May we recognize this true compassion in them for what they have left behind as an aroma of their bright hearts. Bowing to the illumination of the world and the paths of true wisdom. May we all reach the great perfection.
